Many of those are smartly revamped versions of Civ classics, but it finds its own identity with great new ideas like spread-out cities, customizeable governments, research boosts, and leader agendas. I played the Xbox One version, and came away impressed with the job done by porting house Aspyr, which worked with original developer Firaxis. Civ 6 is a complicated, turn-based strategy game, and players have to be able to click with precision, move through pages of data, and take in a large amount of information while playing.

Aspyr makes it feel easy to navigate the screen, move units around, and deploy orders to cities. I cross the screen by skidding along its hexagons, moving quickly and smoothly from one continent to the other via my gamepad.

This serves as a slower navigational route than using a mouse or trackpad to point and click, but it works well enough. I use a simple matrix of left thumbstick and main buttons for most unit movements, as well as shoulder buttons for deeper menus.

Civilization 6 is an engrossing game in which players create their own civilization based on real historical leaders through choices of military conquest, technological superiority, cultural or religious dominance. If you have a PC, Mac, or modern iPad, those are better platforms than console. After all, this is a game designed for PC, and those are better platforms for games that require lots of pointing and clicking on a large map.

But while I do recommend this marvelous game, I also think the price tag is too high. The original game came out three years ago.

This has a marked effect on how players grow their empires, making the strategy of grabbing faraway chunks of land self-defeating. Organic growth from the center is more realistic to real empire building. It also means that rival civilizations that spam faraway land masses with remote cities can no longer thrive, which is still a significant annoyance in the core game. Global warming and natural disaster systems added in Gathering Storm give Civ 6 an added richness and complexity, especially in late game.

Players must deal with rising sea levels.

Diplomacy shifts in emphasis as nations agree on a need to cooperate to combat a shared threat. Taken as a whole, these post-launch improvements are fundamental gameplay advances on the original design. They render the core game dated. Both the updates, which are packaged together, also include the sort of DLC added-value stuff you might expect, such as new civilizations, characters, maps, and items.

But their real value is in the details of the gameplay updates, which radically improve the game. We live in an age when companies regularly update their games as a service to players. A tumultuous expansion that finally introduces golf to Civilization. Yet Civilization has rarely felt this structured or cohesive. In Rise and Fall, the system has been been spun out into two different types of era: player eras and game eras. And what is an otherwise daunting, massive game is split up into discrete, manageable chunks and accompanying objectives.

During a game era, every civ is in an unacknowledged race to increase their era score with historic moments. Being the first civ to befriend a city state, killing your first bandit camp, making a city a commercial centre—anything that represents an important decision or a world-first can net you points. Depending on how many you have, the next era will be a normal, Golden or Dark Age.

These ages affect the loyalty of your citizens and let you pick era-long buffs that give you new abilities, like recruiting builders by spending faith, or make it easier to accumulate era points through things like building districts or conquering.

Get a Golden Age and you might see your civ enter a period of unparalleled prosperity with every city praising your name, while a Dark Age could spell civil war as citizens become disloyal and revolt, turning their cities into free cities that can be snatched up or seduced by other empires. Cree Alliances and trade are the Cree specialities, and traders can even bring tiles under Cree control.

Netherlands Trade and culture is the Dutch brand, while rivers are where they should set up shop. Scotland A civ that balances science and production while liberating cities and filling the world with golf courses. Zulu A martial civ that can make corps and armies early and comes with a unique military district.

Korea A science-based civ with its own science district and extra benefits from having governors in cities. Mapuche When Mapuche units beat up enemies, nearby enemy citizens are so impressed that they become disloyal. Mongolia The Mongolians obviously get cavalry bonuses, but its their trading posts that make them really dangerous. If anything, it could stand to be a little harsher, though I do appreciate that it feels less like a punishment and more like a very different, slightly trickier path.

There have been a few large-scale international emergencies, though. These are new cooperative events that task civs with banding together to solve a crisis, targeting another empire. It essentially created a mission where I had to hold it for 16 turns and the rest of the world had to stop me.

Clearly, my situational awareness could use some work. Note to self: when directing troops, be wary of ash clouds looming over mountains. In the game, the disasters make city planning more of a challenge. Is it worth farming in a floodplain? Or building a campus next to that volcano for the extra science points? Just like in the real world, sometimes the reward is worth the risk, and the newly fertile soil from a flood might be a decent trade-off for temporary destruction.

Other times, you just keep your fingers crossed that the volcano goes dormant quickly, or that you can research dams before the next major flood, or flood barriers before sea levels rise. And boy, do the sea levels rise. The game tells you which areas will flood first, second, and third as you and your fellow civilizations push carbon dioxide into the air, so you can avoid those areas while settling.

Or not, you do you. Not producing any carbon dioxide is pretty difficult once you get to the later ages. Starting around the industrial age, you have to excavate and burn coal and oil to power your cities, which pump out the greenhouse gas. And sometimes, other nations will block your efforts to switch fuel sources — during one game, nuclear power was banned.

Unlike the real world, there is an option to reduce the natural hazards. You could just earn an early cultural victory and ignore the later ages with their climate catastrophes entirely. I inadvertently tried that with one of the new leaders, Kristinawho gains diplomatic favor every time you earn a great person.

She dominated the reintroduced and revamped World Congress. The mechanics of diplomacy are appealing — you have to spend favor to get your way with your neighbors and the other nations of the world — but I wanted to see more eruptions. With Kristina, I kept the natural hazards at the standard level; two, on a scale of zero to four. I saw a few floods, and some hurricanes, but the good stuff was always happening on another continent.

The next time I played, I turned it up to four, which led my poor warrior to get destroyed by what I can only assume was a laharor maybe a lava bomb spit out by Lautaro volcano. I know it was Lautaro volcano, because in this version of the game, volcanoes and rivers are named and labeled on the map. Giving disasters names is also really common here in the real world — it helps us wrap our heads around what might seem to be random events. The map is beautiful in other ways, too.
