Earlier engines mostly and earlier had a Spark Advance camshaft that can not be timed using Static timing. The timing mark S or SP on your flywheel is at twenty degrees before top dead center but at rest the points on these engines break about ten degrees after top dead center. The manual tells you to Static Time to the "T" mark on the flywheel but the only reliable way to check or set the timing on these engines is with a timing light.

There are a couple ways to determine what camshaft you have. Presuming the camshaft in your engine is the one it was born with the data plate on the engine has a suffix that can tell you what camshaft was used.

The table below will tell you the suffix applicable to your engine. The other way to determine what camshaft you have is to remove the cam gear cover and take a look. If you see a mechanism attached to the cam side of the gear it is the ACR cam. The following engines have the spark advance camshaft. Hello Ronmac, As long as you align all the marks as below you shouldn't have any issue Rotating the crank one revolution from TDC compression will put you on exhaust stroke, Rotating another revolution will put you back at TDC compression and re-align the timing marks Good Luck.

Sir, Have done all the above and it still want crank, let me go over one more time, If I am sitting in front of spark plug hole and align gears with the timing notches on crank with the crank keyway straight toward me and piston top center, then you say it should crank, but it has a bad kick back and only pops.

This was originally posted in the Scag forum, but because of the greater activity in the engine repair forum I am duplicating the post here.

Kohler CH engine that has died and defies troubleshooting. The grass is growing and I am desperate for suggestions.

K361 timing question

The Scag is 6 years old, hours, and has been completely reliable up until now. I had just started a right turn after having mowed a straight line for about 2 minutes when it happened, probably just a coincidence, but it did happen at the instant I started the turn. When I looked at the engine the air hose from the air cleaner was off the carburetor, presumably blown off by the force of the backfire. When I crank the engine it fires and sounds as if it is going to run, but when I release the key from the start position the engine it dies.

I have confirmed fuel is being pumped and the carburetor fuel shutoff solenoid is operating correctly. I pulled spark plugs and one was damp with a gas odor. Visual inspection of the carburetor shows nothing amiss, linkages are working correctly, although the throttle valve moves little from the full open position, which is where I normally run it. It appears that the fuel supply is not the cause. I have checked that there are no obstructions to the air flow and attempted starting with the air cleaner removed.

I find no problem with the air flow. I have replaced both spark plugs. I have used a spark plug tester that shows both cylinders are sparking. The local Scag guy said he has seen similar symptoms with a broken valve push rod.

I pulled the valve covers and all push rods appear sound and straight. Pushing on the rocker arms showed all valves moving freely.Mark O'Brien started his professional writing career in at the "Newman Grove Reporter" newspaper.

A 20 horsepower Kohler engine's timing is determined by the alignment of the flywheel on top of the engine. There is a magnet on the side of the flywheel that passes the engine's magneto, which causes the spark plug to ignite the gas in the piston. The flywheel is held onto the crankshaft by the flywheel key.

Over time, the key will wear out, throwing off the engine's timing. To time the ignition of the engine, you will need to replace the flywheel key. Unscrew the right bolts that hold the flywheel shroud over the flywheel on the top of the Kohler engine. Push the flywheel holder over the flywheel fins on top of the flywheel. Hold the flywheel holder while an assistant unscrews the center flywheel nut. Hook the two arms of the gear puller under the outer edges of the flywheel and center the puller bolt on the crankshaft in the center of the flywheel.

Tighten the bolt of the puller until the puller pries the flywheel off the crankshaft. Remove any remains of the old flywheel key from the groove in the crankshaft under the flywheel. Push the new flywheel key into the groove. Slide the flywheel onto the crankshaft so the groove in the flywheel center hole lines up with the new flywheel key. Push the flywheel holder over the flywheel fins. Tighten the flywheel nut back on. Remove the flywheel holder.

How to set timing on a lawnmower.

When the flywheel key gets worn out or shears off, the flywheel timing will be off and the magnet located on the flywheel won't spin past the engines magneto at the correct time, therefore preventing the spark plug from firing. Unscrew the 8 bolts holding the flywheel cover over the flywheel on top of the engine. Use the proper sized sockets to remove the bolts around the perimeter of the cover. Pull the cover off. Fit the flywheel holder over the fins on the outer edge of the flywheel.

Have an assistant hold the flywheel holder firmly. Unscrew the flywheel nut from the center of the flywheel with the proper sized socket. Hook the three arms of the gear puller under the bottom edges of the flywheel. Position the center bolt of the puller over the crankshaft where you just removed the flywheel nut.

Tighten the puller bolt until the pressure breaks the flywheel free from the crankshaft. Pull the old flywheel rectangular key out of the crankshaft under the flywheel. Push the new hp Kohler flywheel key into the groove where the old one was set. Slide the flywheel back onto the crankshaft so the groove in the flywheel hole lines up with the flywheel key pressed into the crankshaft.
